What makes Express Data special – by our newest recruit

Express Data’s newest recruit, Sales Executive Jack Smith, lifts the lid on what makes the company special.

“I joined Express Data in April 2021. I am the newest member of the sales team and am pleased to report that my first few months at Express Data have been both a challenge and a learning curve. 

Express Data has been keen for me to develop some hands-on practical skills. As such, I have spent a month with our field engineers understanding the basic skills and difficulties of their job.  

From hairnets to steel-toe-cap boots 

I have crawled through dusty and dark roof voids running fibre-optic cable in one of the region’s largest colleges and installed network infrastructure such as WiFi units and patch panels in another prestigious Further Education institution. 

As part of our Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) field of work I have surveyed pristine food manufacturing sites for one of the UK’s biggest operators, where I donned a hairnet, beard snood and white overalls, and heavier industrial sites such as at major door manufacturer – where in contrast I pulled on steel-toe-cap boots and safety goggles, and left smattered with dust! 

The last few months have been varied to say the least, and I have met some lovely and helpful people both at Express Data (where we are a friendly, close-knit group) and among our customers.  

Working hands-on 

Sales is a new line of work to me, as my previous role was as a Manufacturing Engineer working on aircraft engines for Rolls-Royce. My technical background has certainly helped me fit in at Express Data, however, and I relish the chance to continue in a hands-on role with every customer, seeing their needs at first hand and building really productive relationships with them.  

To me, sales is about knowing how customers work and solving their problems, not turning up with a flashy sales presentation then disappearing. 

Express Data also believes in developing our people to bring our customers added value by creating a talented, loyal team. So I’m on my way to an NVQ in sales, along with mentorship from the senior management team, to help me develop into the sales role.  

So far, I have loved the variety and the challenges I’ve been exposed to at Express Data, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
